Win
You are betting that your horse will come in first. You win if the horse wins.

Place
You are selecting a horse to be placed. This bet generally pays less than the win bet but it gives you two chances to win instead of just one.

Sweepstakes betting

In which large entry fees, or stakes, are pooled and awarded to the winners.

Exacta

In this bet you choose the first two finishing horses in the order of their finish. This means: you choose the horse that wins and the horse that finishes second. This bet is valid on all races with three or more runners.
Quiniella

Quinella, you select the horses that finish first and second. Either one can be first and the other one second.

Trifecta or Triple
In this bet you select the first three finishing horses in the order of their finish. You choose the horse that wins, the horse that finishes second and the horse that finishes third.

The simplest form of this wager is the Straight Trifecta, a single combination of the first three finishers. The minimum wager for a Straight Trifecta is $2. Remember that Trifecta is not offered in all races at all tracks.

Superfecta

You select the first four finishing horses in the order of their finish. Select the horse that wins, the horse that finishes second, the horse that finishes third and the horse that finishes fourth.

Is very difficult to determine the top four finishing horses, the superfecta is not a very popular bet among seasoned handicappers. The simplest form of this bet is the Straight Superfecta, a single combination of the first four finishers. The minimum wager for a Straight Superfecta is $2.

Bet Three
You are betting that the horses you select will come in first in three consecutive races.
